Club History

1998 - present

The Club was founded in the 1998/99 season following a parting of ways with another local side and, as legend has it, a lively conversation in the Joseph Paxton pub on Hunts Pond Road. Originally known as the Paxton Pumas, we began with just nine committed players. Those early days were challenging, turning up short‑handed and taking some heavy defeats, but the spirit was exceptional. By the end of that first season, more players had joined, and momentum began to build. In our third season, Hampshire RFU invited us to enter the league structure, marking the start of our formal competitive journey.

Since then, the Pumas have continued to grow and evolve. Under Chairman Rich Jones, the Club developed a strong social culture and ensured we played as much rugby as possible. Our most successful period of senior growth came under Chairman George Winch, who expanded the adult section to nearly three teams plus a thriving Vets side. Although numbers dipped after the pandemic, our new leadership team is working hard to rebuild depth, and we continue to welcome new players to strengthen our 2XV and support regular fixtures.

George also launched our Walking Rugby programme, which now attracts a dedicated group enjoying an energetic session every Saturday throughout the summer.

Perhaps George’s most significant legacy was recognising the need to bring rugby into the heart of our community. This led to the creation of the Puma Cubs. Over the past six years, our Mini and Youth section has grown to more than 280 young players, offering Age Grade rugby from Year R through to Under‑16s. The Cubs have become a cornerstone of the Club, providing a safe, inclusive and enjoyable environment for local children to discover the game.

While we take our rugby seriously, Locks Heath Pumas RFC has always been built on community, camaraderie and family. Our social culture is central to who we are, welcoming players, partners, families and supporters. The continued growth of the Club reflects not only the rugby we play, but the friendships and enjoyment found off the pitch.

To our players: remember that rugby is about enjoyment. Give 100% and the post‑match beer tastes even better—wise words from Tom O. We also ask for your commitment to availability; as we often say, the best ability is availability.

To our supporters: thank you for your unwavering backing. The lads value it enormously, and your presence as our “16th man” will be vital in the season ahead. Under Chairman Ben Stallard, now entering his second year, the Club has stabilised and strengthened, culminating in our senior side’s promotion to Hampshire 4.

And to anyone discovering us for the first time: come down, watch a match, share a drink afterwards, and experience what makes the Pumas special.
